Thoughts on Memorial Day.
Strangely enough, members of the military and the medical world have a very important thing in common. That is that at some point they may be called upon to make a life or death decision; that is whether a particular person will live or die. When that time comes, the decision must be made immediately and without sufficient information to make the correct decision. Nevertheless, you will have to make that decision because failure to make the decision is a decision in itself. When that time comes you can only rely on your training and your own compass of what is right and what it wrong.
Yes, you will make that decision one way or another. My point here is to emphasize one thing. Once the decision is made NEVER second guess yourself. You did the best you could under the circumstances you were under at the time. The only way to live with this decision is to avoid revisiting it. If you can manage it, never think of it at all. If you continue to revisit the point of decision you will eventually find that you did something wrong and that way lies madness.
